Can some-one here in Australia give me a quick rundown of what I need to buy (ie brand name), how much to use and any other general information. I don't really feel like wading through the thread on Vintage to come up with brands that aren't available here.

Also, is it toxic, any precautions I need to take etc.  As I don't have a container large enough for a frame I was thinking of lining a box with black plastic(?) drop sheet type stuff I bought at Bunnings. It won't eat through that will it?

Thanks in advance.

James, you can get it from most hardware stores, it's called Diggers Rust and Stain remover. It comes a similar container to Caustic Soda. I get mine from Mitre 10.

Always good to wear gloves, but no it won't eat through plastic and it won't burn your hands. You can actually leave the stickers on whatever you want to clean up and it won't hurt 'em at all.

Keep me posted on those pads to.

I'm dead keen on giving it a go on the GT cruiser.
The issue is what to put the frame in.
How long would it stay in?
The bath is looking good though I think the wife
will freak. Not that I would tell her. They do seem
to have this built in sense of knowing.
Any ideas?

I have used it several times and it works great. I use my bare hands in the stuff and I've still got all my skin. No burns at all.
Diggers is the best brand. Comes in a 5kg container and I get it from the industrial cleaning section of Bunnings. Near the big bad acids!  Costs about $20.
It will kill alloy bits
It won't harm stickers (except the tin/alloy ones)
When your done you should neutralise the solution inside the frame. I just flush it with clean water them drown it (after drying) with WD40.
What to use??? Thats the hardest part. Check the tip shops for old tubs and sinks. I have a fibreglass boatbuilder in the family so I made a purpose built tub.
Good luck.

I use a tub I got from Plastics Unlimited, it was called a under bed compartment, it is fairly low and just big enough for a frame.
Hey coasty, maybe drop that SLA in for a bit Shocked Grin  just kidding

Thanks guys. Headed over to Bunnings and they only have the liquid concentrate (1lt) and recommend a 1 to 4 mix. It must be a useless Bunnings because they don't have caustic soda at the moment either.

One more question though. How do you get rid of it? Do you dilute it even further first?

The under bed tubs may be the way to go. One metre long so they would fit a 20" frame no problem. $45 is a tad costly though for me to do one frame.

Yes dilute it more and pull the plug

It is a mild acid should use gloves. It tastes funny too.

Try lining something with plastic or dig a hole or even your bucket seats Jarvi

I reckon the boot of a V dub would work well James Smiley
James I asked at Bunnings for 2 years before I found it. They had no idea what or where it was. I found it with the slate/ driveway cleaning stuff. 1st aisle. The staff at Bunnings are absolutely useless. I walked up and down every aisle and found it.

when i went to bunnings i asked for oxalic acid and they looked at me as if i was weird (maybe i am LOL). ask for wood bleach and they'll take you straight to it. it's available in pre-mix liquid or as crystals. i went for the crystals as it can be mixed at whatever ratio with water you want. remember to fill the container with water first then add the acid.

i don't get rid of the mixture, i bought one of those big plastic storage containers as a dipping tank and just put the lid back on it to stop evaporation.

Wow $45, Mine was only around $20, maybe try 'The Warehouse/Crazy Klints' or the reject shop? I've got to do some shopping tomorrow, I'll have a sniff around for you Wink

I found the liquid version in the paint section and there was nothing in the commercial cleaning area. I too wandered up and down all the isles but then I'm hopeless at seeing things. Just today I needed some gardening gloves and found some hanging as specials in a few isles and wandered around and was about to ask some-one when I looked to the right and there was one row that went for half an isle full of gloves and I'd nearly walked past them. Did make me question what the world has come to when there is about 30 different types (not sizes) of gloves.

Good idea to look at the reject shops.

It has taken me a long time to find where the "diggers" branded stuff is at BUnnings, but at my local one it lives with the tile grout and pre-mix concrete.

It's official, I must live near the worst Bunnings. Tried the tile grout area (thanks MKM) and no luck.
