Has anyone made forks?
I scored a redline MTB which had suspension forks, I pulled them to bits and ended up with an alloy steerer and the top part of forks with no legs. The holes for the fork legs are 1 inch outside diameter and have high tensile hex head bolts to hold the forks in and seem pretty light. What I am wondering is if I can find the chromoly or perhaps stainless in the right outside diameter, do the tubes for forks need to be thicker than that used in the frame. I can find frame info easily enough, just not if forks need to be heavier?
anyone have any thoughts?
Cheers Tim

Tim, Bottema skatepark forks are 0.065 wall thickness and are Cro-moly. Thats 1.651 mm in case your wondering.
I wouldn't use SS as it's too brittle for forks. Alloy forks are good for toddlers (ie Hutch Lawsuit forks) so I wouldn't use anything but cro mo or regular steel. Most low end forks bitd were made of regular steel.
