Hi all, first time here.  Great site, brings back a lot of memories. I'm thinking about getting another bmx after a very long absence from the sport. I told my wife but got a response not suitable to repeat here. the thing is I'm 41 but i really loved the sport as a kid and want to do something that is cheap, accessable and good for my fitness. I'm thinking of a bit of freestyle and dirt jumping. Maybe I'm dreaming but the idea seems sort of attractive. Are there any/ many other older people who ride this style?
Any feedback is good.
Thanks
Mark

Mark there are plenty of guys your age back into vert and dirt. Coasty is a skate bowl king and Jarvi and Roberto are freestyle aces who are all (except Roberto) older than you. If you are in Queensland come up to Blast from the Past in Feb to catch up with all the guys and have some fun. Link to it is in events.

And Welcome Mark.

Cheers Adrian

Hi Mark and welcome, you aren't too old, I can't ride to save myself though, age is just a number (although the judge told me it does matter, but that's another story), and you certainly wouldn't be the oldest on this site.
cheers Tim

Hi Mark, These guys are spot on.
You know who my screensaver is at the moment on my PC?
Brian Blyther. A 45 year old cop from the US. He is about 6 foot out of the new Pipeline skatepark.
Eddie Fiola still rides, Dave Voelker still rides, Woody Itson..you get the idea.
Hell even STU Thomsen still races.
Man if you can still do it, then do it. It might take a bit longer to recover but the fun is so worth it.
Oh and we will be racing again in 2010. Theres a retro race series in every state around OZ.
This is Brian (riding) and Clint Millar (the Aussie owner of Colony that still rides too)

Heres a pic of a mate of mine in the US, His name is Alvin Mullins.
Alvin is very high up in Century 21 real estate and has a Half pipe in his back yard.
This is him at Pipeline.
45 years old too.

I'm only 36 but I've punsihed myself over the years so my bodys "real" age is probably in the late 40's. I cop heaps from people at work and so called friends about bmx bandits and kids bike but couldnt care less.
I Love it! My wife has been really supportive since i rediscovered my childhood passion (once she stopped laughing at me that is) At first I found just cruising up the shop was great but even that knocked the wind out of me. Hit the track and the first few times felt like i was going to have a hearty. try doing five or six laps at local track in an hour or so and you'll know you're alive (if only just)
My advice/opionion (and remember opions arent that special coz weve all got one) is give it a go. lifes no dress rehearsal. get on it and ride it. ease into it if like me you'd been sedentry for yonks but push yourself and enjoy. no better way to get close to your kids than doing something with them they're fully into. if you dont get into it sell the bike and try yoga or learning a new language or something else.
My only caution is bones dont heal as quickly anymore. the pain seems worse and lasts longer, but its still worth it.
too old ? no chance?

One of the fellow racers at Ashmore when I made a comeback (!!!) was 55 years old and had a pacemaker. He used to kick my butt every race. I was a smoker then though.

Hey Foxy,
NEVER -Get into it dude, you will feel 16 till you fall like the guys said but it is soooooooooooo much fun again!

I'm 36yo and my eldest son turned 5 in October and got off his trainers so the next stop was the local BMX track for him, which has been closed for many many years. We (my wife and I) have started the club again just before christmas with just 5 members so far but the main thing is we will be giving a little bit back to the sport I loved/love so much.

When I trim back the verandah over the toy shop a little more I will hopefully get into racing again.

Just learning to fly again!
