hi was wondering if anyone could tell me when taking the cog off the cranks is the locking nut a left or right hand thread i have never done one before and dont want to stuff it up thanks ray

The outer cone and locknut (non-drive side) is a reverse thread. The cone/nut holding the sprocket on is a normal thread.
