Check out the description on this ebuy ad. Did we really drill out cranks back then??

Funny if silicone weighs more than alloy!

That must have been a pretty good secret cos i never heard of it....way to kill a good set of cranks.
Damn that would have to be at the top of the "That suks" list for me

Yeah I guess it was a good secret. I admit I did drill out a chainring for lightness. Can anyone remmeber a 1 piece crank that had 3 or 4 lightening holes drilled thru it?

lethal = Tritons

Pedals only hurt when you slip off. Sharp pedals have more grip means less slip.

I sharpened my KKT Rattraps and I still have them. I have the scars on my shins too!
I drilled a few things out but they died quickly. I know you should never drill an Addicks sprocket out! Still got that too!

I remember chopping the front of one of my one piece seat and post setup. I think it was for lightness but it would have made bugger all difference.

Also mid 80's we started drilling out front forks and running front brakes, I think that was a fashion thing.

Filing pedals too but that was because it was cheaper than buying a new set, got a set of Hutch beartraps and didn't need to worry after that.

The first thing to get "Chopped" was the 39T original chainwheel cut out the inner ring & drilled holes on the outer ring,
Suntour seat clamp had the raised bit removed,
the brakes had the steel cable adjuster & other steel fittings replaced with alloy parts,
KKT lightning pedals cages drilled & teeth sharpened this improved the grip however when you did slip....let's say I can still find the divots in my shins,
drilled out the bolts on the seat clamp & stem,
replaced the original pads with Cal lights,
filled my tyres with nitrogen don't really know if this made the wheels lighter but it sounded uber uber tre cool Cool
I used to leave the inner cable about 15cm too long then cable tie a 15cm length of outer cable to the frame & forks for the extra length to run in.

I don't think the weight saved made up for the 6" sidchrome & 2 screwdrivers in my top pad. Roll Eyes

Hey there Scary.
That cable idea was done on my bike too. I first saw it on Donny Atherton's Schwinn in BMXA. I bet a heap of us tried the same thing before coming to our senses. Remember when RL Osborne cable tied foam padding to his bars? I did that too. WTF was I thinking?  Cheesy

Actually something that I didnt see back then but I see now is drilled holes in the handlebars under the grips. How did we miss that back in 1981?

How dodgy were those cranks???  Roll Eyes

Err, never heard of drilling cranks out - I managed to bend DX cranks anyway, drilling them out wouldn't have helped. Shocked

And no, silicone is NOT significantly lighter than Alloy...  Wink
