Ive got an alloy chainring that was chromed at one time, most of the chrome is cactus and is starting to flake and fall off. Does anyone know an easy way to remove the rest of the chrome without destroying the alloy underneath. I'm looking for a lazy way out, i.e. some type of nasty chemical i can dip it in and hey presto. If i have to resort to sanding or blasting will the fact that the alloy is heaps softer than the chrome be an issue. Just looking to divert any disaster before it happens.
or if anyone has a blue anno or clear anno chainring to suit takagi ultra dyno cranks let me know and then i wont have to stuff around with the old one.
any help appreciated

Easiest way is to take it to an electroplater and ask them to chemically strip it.  Just be sure to point out that it is alloy underneath.  They would probably realise but better to be safe than sorry.  Not sure what it would cost as they vary from shop to shop.

Then again, it might just he cheaper to find another one.

not sure how they are measured but if you took a circle through the centre of the holes where its bolts on to the crank/spider that circles diameter would be 130mm. If you measured an old sugino one using the same method it would measure about 110mm so its a fair bit bigger. Dont care how many teeth anywhere between 40 and 46 is cool. If I can get another then I can go to town experimenting with nasty alkalines on the one I've got. I've tried aluminuim in both severe and mild acids and found they are definately not friends....what came out looked like a stubbie that had been kicked into the camp fire, and then it crumbled into dust.

Thanks Troy, the big blue girl sounds good to me but I'd be happy with whichever you think you are least likely to need in the future. Now just need to arrange transport........ do you know a good courier from Eumundi to Gympie Huh??? I'll even steer clear of Squirrel till you pass through next.

U have a ear for quality, thats the original off the quicky.
I'll probably use the 42 on the rebuild then.

Its only for my hotfoot mate so you might wanna keep the og one for your quicky, I'll be happy with anything that looks better than the flaky one sitting beside me.
