Couple of questions, what would one pay for a full set of nylon GT, Oakley, Fox just to name a few. Ok so what I'm getting at is that I maybe in the postion to make old school pad sets, screened and made on top quaility water proof marine grade nylon and velcro.
Also if the interest was there I would cosider doing a few old school pattern t/shirts. At the moment it's just a thought ( I just happen to be lucky to have all the right contacts)

Pro you could pay up to $150 bucks for a repo set of pads that are the same as the originals, especially for the big name brands etc. And yes im very interested as you know lol.

Pro, I think you got to price those sort of things on a sliding scale, the further north or west you are the more you pay.
So Tasmanians get it all for free, cos they have 2 heads to feed, Victorians pay material cost only because they don't get to see hardly any NRL, have to put up with crappy weather and that bloody grand prix; South Australians and N.S.Welshmen pay full price because they got good tips full on nice bikes to raid and Queenslands and West Australians pay a 400% mark-up because they have beaches and babes in bikinis all year round and the best weather in the country.
I'm sure Adrian will agree with me!

Seriously I'd be interested in a bar pad for my Fatrax depending on affordability. T-shirts would be cool too. I guess you have to look at you costs and time and work it out so you get a return that makes it worth doing, of course custom made stuff or one off is always more costly due to the set up cost often being the same for 1 or 1000 of an item.
Anyway if you check ebay you'll set what pad sets go for, it's obscene sometimes, martinbikes has the record prices paid for stuff too here: http://martinbike.jalbum.net/For%20Sale/eBay%20Price%20Records/index.html

For example JMC Flite pads: Dec-08 $304, NOS Profile pads: Dec-08 $228.38, Mongoose pads: Sep-08 $192.49, so if you see the record price and work out if the effort is worth it and if you are doing it for the good of the hobby or as a commercial venture; you might be able to come up with a price you think is good and let people know and they'll tell you what they think.

Of course this advice is my intellectual property and if you use it it's gunna cost you some pads and t-shirts Smiley

Pro, I am all for it. Pads and Shirts.
One thing and it's a big one.
Theres a lot of people getting in deep doo doo for reproing licensed material. Shirts are usually not so bad but pads can get tricky.
GT, Mongoose, SE, Hutch and CW are companies that will bounce you on your head if they see them. A couple for us local lads would be fine but as for selling them, no. Don't bother.
BTW I am desperate for 79 style Proline Pads. Hicks makes them and they are expensive and wrong. Very wrong.

There are many ways around copyright Wink Wink  a slight change here a slight change there, you get the picture. It has a lot to do with  how you do it, apart from the fact I'm not talking mass production here  Smiley and remember you can't get sued for buying, using or wearing a item or reprduction . It's pretty simple if you don't believe in copies or reproductions, don't buy them.

LOL This is a topic I was heavily involved with a few years back.
The Bottema forks copies that Johnny Chopper makes were copied from my Bottema forks. I loaned them to Gary for a few weeks so he could make them. I got attacked from some serious collectors in the US. It got so bad I left the site for a year and apologized to the collectors.
I believe pads are ok with most collectors. It's the guys that own those names that get their knickers in a twist.
Like I said I need pads myself.

If you bought a bike that came out with a certain design on it then you are free to reprodue it for that bike only aren't you, bacuse you paid for the right to have that on it once?

Let's put it this way, if I was to have a copy of say a Gt made exactly the same in every way but did not have GT stamped anywhere on it, and even made my own stickers fot it that had GT on them but where different in design from the original GT Bicycle company ones and I called the bike a Gas Turbo, then there is nothing  the GT Bicycle company could do about it. And that my friends is fact, oh yeah they could jump up and down and have a whinge but legally they can do nothing.

The thing is, if you make them different enough to avoid copyright issues, you are limiting your potential market.  Coasty is an example with the Redline pads being made by Glynn.  Regardless of the price I doubt he would buy them because they are not correct.  Using the Gas Turbo example is a bit of a stretch to try and prove your point.

I am sort of on the fence as far as this topic goes.  For sellers it is easy to say, if you don't agree don't buy them, however, I can't seem to get my head around how to avoid the problem of exact reproductions being passed off as originals.

Hi Javi, I totally agree with you about copies being passed of as originals, at not time did I say that I intended to say or imply that if I made pads, t/shirts or decals, I was going to try and pass them of as originals. If I made any products then they are what they are, copies.
BTW the Gt bikes that I am restoring will all carry my own (totally different design and color)  GT stickers sets, WHY? simply because I think they look better than the factory ones,, and I am not a collector just a guy who likes rebuilding bmx bikes.

Cheers Warren

Integrity is the key word here. If they are Repros then call em repros.

Warren I wasn't implying that you would try and pass them off as originals, I mean people further down the line.  That is, some-one buys them from you and then sells them to some-one else and they sell them to some-one else and eventually the fact they are not originals gets lost along the way.

I'm all for caveat emptor, however, thanks to a few unscrupulous people, we all need to ensure we do our bit to preserve the integrity of this interest we have in BMX.
