Hey all,
You've seen me post a few times.  My brother and I were talking on the phone last night after that collectors thing was on the tele (I didn't see it as I don't have a tv).  Anyway it turns out he would like to resto an old BMX too.
We thought it would be fun to have a couple of bikes to take out and ride together - a good reason to stay in touch and get together more etc.
Anyhow we are looking to build up a couple of bikes from 1980 to 1983 (or 1984 at the latest).  They would be built as per race bikes from BITD.  The type of bike that we would have wanted to have BITD.  No real brand specific or colour needs etc.
The bikes would end up as fully retored as possible, but would be ridden/used loved.
They would not be show only bikes or money making ventures.
This is about having fun and a common interest that hopfully won't break the bank.  We would do most of the resto work ourselves.

Anyhow feel free to jump in with advice on where to start, what it might cost etc...
For example:
1) Old Redline  - with araya rims and a mix of similar quality used or NOS parts from BITD.
2) Old Quicksilver (kitted as above).

I hope this is an appropriate question to ask here.  Thanks for your time and help.

1) i'm thinking of selling one of my 1983 redline proline frame/fork sets. they're a pretty good frame size for the larger rider. i also have a blue set of araya 7c with acs large flange hubs. these will need to be relaced to ride on. LMK if you're interested.

2) the quicky won't be easy to find. i lucked onto one a couple of weeks ago after 2 years of searching.

There is a suitable Redline on ebay right now. Most of the bike is there and all it needs is a wheel set.
You can still buy Tuffs new from Skyway for around $160 shipped. Classic old school looks and almost bullet proof.
I'd say you could do a Redline for around $4-500.
Theres also the later Redlines like the 440 that are very similar to the earlier MXII's. They go or much less and are a good size for a rider.
I built mine for about $100 but I had a few bits already. This could be done for about $300.
Heres mine.

Thanks for the replies.  Sorry for delay in getting back to you both.  I have been flat out (like real flat out) and it prolly won't stop for a while.  So the project is on the back burner for now.
Proline II - The offer to buy the frame was great thanks.
Coasty that Redline of yours looks the goods mate.

Thanks again.
